Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, Curacao beckons with its irresistible charm, offering a haven for travelers seeking both relaxation and exploration. From sun-kissed beaches fringed with swaying palms to the colorful streets of its capital Willemstad, this enchanting destination promises unforgettable Curacao experiences in a tropical paradise island.
Together with Aruba and Bonaire, Curacao is one of the called ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) in the Dutch Antilles. Although Curacao is an autonomous country, it is part of the Dutch Kingdom. For this reason in Curacao you find the uniqueness of Dutch heritage, combined with the vibrant Caribbean culture and ways of living.
Its location in the Southern part of the Caribbean Sea next to the Venezuelan coast and outside of the often called “hurricane belt”, makes it a perfect year round destination. The weather is quite stable and most likely you will find amazing Summer days spiced up by a refreshing ocean wind, despite of the time of the year that you visit it.
Because it has so much to offer, I recommend staying at least one week in Curacao. This will allow you to explore the island, but also to have some time to relax, chill out and enjoy the beach life. Another great option is to combine it with Aruba or Bonaire. There are many direct flights connecting the 3 islands. I visited Aruba a few years ago and I also loved it (check my Travel Guide to Aruba).
Where to stay in Curacao? There are different areas where you can stay in the island, depending on your travel plans. Many visitors stay in Jan Thiel or Mambo Beach. Those are beach resort areas with many options of accommodation, restaurants, bars and shops. Willemstad is another great place to stay, close to everything.
How to travel around Curacao? I rented a car for a few days to explore the island and to go to the most famous beaches. In alternative, you can join some day tours or take the bus.

Explore Vibrant and Colourful Willemstad
Willemstad is probably one of the main reasons I added Curacao to my bucket list many years ago. The colourful and vibrant capital of Curacao deserves that you spend some time exploring it. It was founded by the Dutch West Indian Company in 1634, as a colonial trading settlement. Nowadays it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its beautiful architecture and the unique harbour entry.
The city centre is composed by four quarters that are equally interesting to visit – Punda (the historical neighbourhood), Otrabanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai. When walking in Willemstad, you will be amazed by a perfect mix of Dutch heritage and architecture with the colourful and vibrant Caribbean vibe. The influence of different cultures is quite visible in every corner of the city.
Curacao’s vibrant street art scene is a testament to the island’s rich cultural heritage and creative spirit, transforming the streets of Willemstad into an open-air gallery of expression and inspiration. As you wander through the colorful neighborhoods of Pietermaai and Scharloo, you will encounter a kaleidoscope of murals, graffiti, and urban art reflecting the island’s diverse influences. Each piece of street art tells a unique story, inviting visitors to explore the layers of history, culture and creativity that define Curacao’s urban landscape.
When in Willemstad, don’t miss some of the must see attractions in the city like the Museum Kura Hulanda, the Floating Market, Fort Amsterdam or Curacao Museum.
Cross Queen Emma Floating Bridge
No visit of Willemstad is complete without crossing the famous Queen Emma Floating Bridge over St. Anna Bay, connecting Otrabanda with Punda district. This pontoon bridge was initially built in 1888, but the distinctive lighting arches were added to the bridge only in 1955 to celebrate a royal visit to the city. What makes it so special is the fact that the bridge opens regularly to enable the passage of boats.
When you cross the bridge from Otrabanda to Punda, you will be amazed by the iconic views of Willemstad. In Punda, walk by the typical streets full of culture and art, stop by a terrace to grab some food or drinks, and do some shopping in both international and typical shops available.
Walk around Pietermaii district
Prepare to be enchanted as you stroll through the vibrant streets of Pietermaai District at the heart of Willemstad. This eclectic neighborhood is a captivating blend of Dutch colonial architecture, lively street art, boutique hotels and bustling cafes and restaurants, creating an atmosphere that is as lively as it is charming.
Take enough time to wander through the narrow cobblestone streets lined with pastel-hued buildings and colorful typical houses adorned with intricate facades and ornate balconies.
Go for a Night Out
Curacao offers to visitors a vibrant and eclectic nightlife. In Willemstad, historic streets transform into bustling hubs of activity, with lively bars, clubs, and restaurants lining the colorful waterfront. Here, visitors can dance the night away to pulsating rhythms of Caribbean music, sip on exotic cocktails, and sample delicious local cuisine.
Mambo Beach is also a popular hotspot just outside Willemstad, with beachfront clubs and beach bars hosting live music events and themed parties against the backdrop of the sparkling Caribbean Sea.
For those seeking a more upscale and sophisticated atmosphere, Jan Thiel Beach offers beach clubs and lounges, where guests can enjoy sunset cocktails, gourmet dining, and live entertainment in a stunning coastal setting.
Embrace the Beach Hopping Life
Curacao boasts an impressive array of beaches, each offering its own unique blend of natural beauty, crystal-clear waters and Caribbean charm.
Among the island’s top beach destinations is Grote Knip Beach, renowned for its postcard-perfect scenery and inviting turquoise waters. Nestled between rugged cliffs, this idyllic stretch of sand is a favorite among locals and visitors, offering excellent snorkeling opportunities, serene sunbathing spots and panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea.
For those seeking a more secluded escape, Playa Lagun offers a hidden oasis nestled within a tranquil cove surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lush greenery. Hidden between two giant rock formations, this intimate beach is a haven for snorkelers and divers with clear waters, colorful marine life and vibrant coral formations.
Cas Abao Beach was one of my favourites in the island. This beach stands as a quintessential Caribbean gem, boasting pristine white sands, clear turquoise waters, and a tranquil atmosphere perfect for unwinding and enjoying the island’s natural beauty. With great snorkeling opportunities amidst vibrant coral reefs, as well as amenities like beach bars and restaurants, visitors can indulge in both relaxation and adventure while soaking up the warm Caribbean sun and taking in the stunning coastal views.
One of the best dive sites in the island, Playa Porto Mari is another must visit beach. With its unique double reef formation just a short swim from the shore, this beach is a paradise for snorkelers and divers seeking to explore Curacao’s rich underwater ecosystem. Additionally, it is equipped with amenities such as beach bars, restaurants and sun loungers, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable day by the sea.
Some other great beaches to consider are Kokomo Beach, Playa Forti, Mambo Beach, Playa Kalki or Jan Thiel Beach. For resort beaches, I recommend the one at Avila Beach Hotel, in Willemstad.
Enjoy the views at Santa Martha Bay
Located in the northern coast of Curacao, the picturesque Santa Martha Bay is a hidden gem renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views and serene coastal beauty. As you stand atop the cliffs overlooking the bay, you’re greeted by a mesmerizing view that stretches as far as the eye can see.

Find Pink Flamingos
Did you know you can find pink flamingos in their natural habitat in Curacao? Begin your journey by visiting the Flamingo Sanctuary at Jan Kok Salt Pans, where flocks of flamingos gracefully wade through the shallow waters. Their brilliant plumage casts a vivid contrast against the vivid blue sky and shimmering salt pans.
If you are seeking a more intimate encounter with these iconic birds, consider embarking on a guided tour to hidden flamingo habitats across the island. From secluded lagoons to remote beaches, Curacao offers a variety of opportunities to spot flamingos in their element, providing a truly immersive wildlife experience for nature enthusiasts.
Hike around Christoffel National Park
If you like hiking, embark on a journey of exploration and adventure amidst the rugged beauty of Christoffel National Park, a natural wonderland nestled in the heart of Curacao. As you set out along the well-marked trails, you will find yourself surrounded by towering cacti, lush vegetation and panoramic views that stretch to the horizon.
The highlight of any hiking excursion in the park is undoubtedly the ascent to the summit of Mount Christoffel, the highest peak in the island. The challenging yet rewarding trail winds its way through rocky terrain and dense vegetation, offering glimpses of native wildlife and captivating views along the way. Upon reaching the summit, hikers are rewarded with unparalleled panoramic views of Curacao’s rugged coastline, rolling hills, and turquoise waters.
Chase a Perfect Sunset
As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of gold, pink and orange, Curacao transforms into a mesmerizing canvas of beautiful sunsets. The island offers an array of stunning sunset spots to witness this breathtaking spectacle.
One great spot is the iconic Grote Knip Beach. As the sun sets over the Caribbean Sea, casting a warm glow over the landscape, visitors gather to bask in the beauty of nature’s grand finale.
For a more elevated perspective, head to the westernmost point of the island and discover the scenic vistas of Playa Forti. Perched atop towering cliffs overlooking the azure waters below, this hidden gem offers panoramic views of the coastline and distant horizon, making it an ideal spot for capturing stunning sunset photographs.
Another enchanting sunset spot awaits at the historic Willemstad waterfront. Las but not least, I saw the most beautiful sunset in the island at the beach in Avila Beach Hotel.
Sail the Caribbean to Klein Curacao
A not to miss experience in this region is sailing to Klein Curacao, a small uninhabited island located just off the southeastern coast of Curacao. Take a day trip with one of the several operators providing fully catered trips to this bounty island. There are different options available, from private luxury boats to catamarans or speed boats.
The journey to Klein Curacao takes from 50 minutes up to 2 hours, depending on the boat you choose. It is as much a part of the adventure, as the destination itself. As the boat glides across the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, you might even catch a glimpse of playful dolphins dancing in sea. When the island comes into view on the horizon, you will be amazed by its raw and untamed beauty, with pristine white sands and swaying palms beckoning you to shore.
Upon reaching Klein Curacao, you will have the chance to explore this remote and unspoiled paradise at your own pace. Whether you choose to snorkel in the vibrant coral reefs, relax on the sun-drenched beaches, or simply soak in the serenity of the surroundings, a day spent in Klein Curacao is a day well spent in blissful seclusion. Don’t miss the opportunity to walk to the famous pink lighthouse in the middle of the island.
