One of the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland, and maybe in all of Europe, lies hidden among lush forests and scenic mountains in the Bernese region. With its deep blue waters and the enchanting natural park that surrounds it, Blausee Lake is a destination worth discovering and adding to a Swiss road trip, particularly in autumn, when the landscape is dressed in golden hues. This is why I want to share with you the magic of autumn at Blausee Lake, Switzerland.
I recently visited Blausee Lake and I was mesmerised by the natural beauty of this place, which despite its small size, offers some of the most beautiful sceneries in Switzerland. The experience begins as soon as you arrive at the natural park surrounding the lake, where lovely forest trails invite you to wander among towering trees, moss-covered rocks and secluded corners that seem straight out of a fairytale.
In October, the warm colours of the fallen leaves, ranging from golden yellow and orange to brown, contrast with the deep green of the forest, transforming the walk into a true immersion in the beauty of autumn in Switzerland.
When you finally reach the lake, it reveals itself in all its splendour. You are greeted by crystal-clear waters in an intense shade of blue, blending into turquoise hues and revealing submerged tree trunks and rock formations beneath the surface. Delicate fallen leaves float across the water, creating a scene reminiscent of a painting.
Beyond its undeniable natural beauty, Blausee Lake is also steeped in legend. According to local folklore, many years ago, a young woman who was deeply in love was devastated by the death of her fiancé. She spent her days by the lake, mourning her loss, until she eventually drowned in its waters. Her endless tears are said to have contributed to the lake’s unique colour, as blue as the young woman’s eyes. To perpetuate this story, a stone statue of a woman sculpted by artist Raffael Fuchs lies submerged at the bottom of the lake.
The explanation for Blausee extraordinary colour, however, is far more pragmatic. The exceptional clarity of its waters is due to spring water, naturally filtered through rocks and sediment. The interaction of light with the water enhances its intense blue and turquoise shades, which become even more striking against the warm colours of the autumn foliage.
To visit Blausee Lake, you need to purchase a ticket granting access to the surrounding natural park. Admission includes a boat ride on the lake, as well as access to a picnic area, a children’s playground and an organic trout hatchery. There is also a café with a terrace offering privileged views over the lake, as well as a hotel with a restaurant.
Blausee Lake is located in Kander Valley, in the Bernese Oberland, relatively close to Bern and less than an hour’s drive from the stunning Jungfrau region. This area is home to some of Switzerland’s most iconic destinations, including Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and Interlaken, and offers opportunities to ascend to some of the highest peaks in the Alps.
For this reason, Blausee makes an excellent stop on a road trip through the region, especially at this time of year, when the forests burst into autumn colours and the landscape takes on an even more enchanting atmosphere.
